Explore the G.A.P. Trail with White Water Adventurers
The Great Allegheny Passage — better known as the G.A.P. Trail — is one of the most scenic rail trails in the country. Stretching more than 150 miles between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland, the trail follows the path of former railroad lines through river valleys, forests, and small mountain towns.
Because the route was originally designed for trains, the trail features gentle grades instead of steep climbs, making it enjoyable for riders of all skill levels. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon ride or an all-day adventure, the G.A.P. Trail offers miles of beautiful scenery and easy riding.
Why Ohiopyle is the Perfect Starting Point
Ohiopyle sits right in the heart of the G.A.P. Trail, making it one of the best places to begin your ride. You can head upstream toward Confluence or downstream toward Connellsville depending on how far you want to explore.
One of the best things about the trail is how easy it is to customize your ride. The G.A.P. is clearly marked every mile, so you can simply ride until you’re ready to turn around and head back to Ohiopyle. There’s no pressure to complete a certain distance — the journey itself is the experience.
Along the way, you’ll pass river views, wooded stretches, historic bridges, and plenty of quiet spots to stop and take it all in.
Why Riders Love E-Bikes
Renting an e-bike from White Water Adventurers is a great option for anyone who wants to ride farther while keeping the experience comfortable and fun.
E-bikes use pedal-assist technology to give riders an extra boost while pedaling. You still control the bike and get exercise, but hills and longer distances feel much easier.
E-bikes are especially great for:
- Casual riders
- Families riding together
- Guests who want to cover more miles
- Anyone looking for a more relaxed ride
They allow riders of different experience and fitness levels to enjoy the trail together without worrying about keeping up.
Choose Your Direction: Confluence or Connellsville
Many riders choose to head upstream toward Confluence, a small trail town known for its welcoming atmosphere and riverside charm. It’s the perfect place to stop for lunch before returning to Ohiopyle. You can grab a bite to eat in town or pack a picnic to enjoy beside the trail.
If you’d rather head the opposite direction, the ride toward Connellsville offers a different perspective of the river and surrounding mountains with equally scenic stretches along the way.
No matter which direction you choose, the gradual grades of the G.A.P. Trail make the return ride enjoyable and manageable.
Want Even More Adventure? Try a Pedal & Paddle Package
For guests looking to pack even more adventure into the day, White Water Adventurers offers a pedal/paddle package that combines biking and river travel into one unforgettable experience.
Guests begin the morning riding traditional bicycles from Ohiopyle to Confluence. Once there, the WWA crew swaps out the bikes for inflatable kayaks, and the return trip to Ohiopyle happens by water on the Youghiogheny River.
The pedal/paddle experience takes approximately six hours and is offered exclusively with a 9:00 AM start time to allow plenty of time to enjoy both portions of the trip. Simply choose the 9:00 am Middle Yough Rental start time and your desired water craft. E-bikes are not offered with this package.
Whether you choose a relaxing e-bike ride on the GAP Trail or an all-day pedal-and-paddle adventure, Ohiopyle offers one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of the Laurel Highlands.
