If you spend much time in Ohiopyle, you get used to hearing the river divided into three sections: the Upper Yough, the Middle Yough and the Lower Yough. It sounds simple enough. But here’s the thing: those three sections are surprisingly different. And the story of the Youghiogheny River doesn’t begin in Ohiopyle. It starts more than 100 miles away, and the water that runs past us here will eventually end up in the Gulf of Mexico. So let’s follow the river. If you’ve ever visited Ohiopyle on a beautiful summer weekend, you already know one thing: finding a parking space can sometimes feel like its own adventure. Between whitewater rafters, cyclists on the Great Allegheny Passage, hikers, sightseers, and families enjoying the state park, downtown Ohiopyle can get very busy on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the summer. It’s not unusual for visitors to spend valuable vacation time driving around looking for parking.
