September on the Middle Yough: See Ohiopyle a Different Way
There’s something about Ohiopyle in September.
The mornings arrive a little cooler. The afternoons are warm and comfortable. The trails are quieter, the pace slows down, and before long, the first touches of autumn begin appearing across the mountains.
It’s the kind of weather that makes you want to spend the entire day outside.
And there may be no better place to spend it than tucked inside the Youghiogheny River Gorge.

Leave the Schedule Behind
Pack a lunch. Bring your fishing pole. Grab a sweatshirt for the morning and plan on spending the day exploring.
The Middle Yough travels 11 miles from Confluence back to Ohiopyle through one of the most beautiful sections of Ohiopyle State Park. It’s a gentle stretch of river with just enough little rapids and splashes along the way to remind you that you came to Ohiopyle to have some fun.
But this day doesn’t need an itinerary.
Stop along the shore when you find the perfect picnic spot. Float for a while without paddling at all. Watch the hillsides for wildlife and keep an eye on the sky for a bald eagle.
Then listen.
There are places along the Middle Yough where the gorge becomes incredibly quiet. Sometimes all you’ll hear is the river, the trees and, somewhere in the distance, the whistle of a train echoing through the valley.
That’s a side of Ohiopyle you don’t discover from a parking lot.

Put Yourself Right in the Middle of It
One of our favorite ways to experience the Middle Yough is in a single or double inflatable kayak.
You’re closer to the water, close enough to feel those little splashes as you paddle along. The boats are easy to maneuver, and in a single, you get the fun of having your own craft to paddle down the river.
Never been rafting before? Even better.
The Middle Yough is a great introduction to spending a day on the river. You don’t need to be an experienced paddler or someone looking for a huge whitewater adventure. Sometimes the adventure is simply trying something you’ve never done before.
And when you’re surrounded by the Youghiogheny River Gorge on a beautiful September afternoon, that’s plenty.
Two Ways to See Ohiopyle in One Day
Can’t decide between a day on the trail and a day on the river? Do both.
Start in Ohiopyle and follow the Great Allegheny Passage toward Confluence. The trail carries you through secluded, shaded forests, past towering boulders and through stretches where the Youghiogheny River travels right alongside you.
Around one bend, you’ll catch a glimpse of sparkling water through the trees. Around another, the forest opens to a view you weren’t expecting. Then the trail slips back beneath the canopy again.
There always seems to be another little surprise waiting around the next turn.
Take your time. Stop for pictures. Pull over when something catches your eye. This isn’t a race to Confluence. The ride is part of the day.
When you reach the Middle Yough launch area, we’ll meet you and swap your bicycle for your river equipment.
Then your perspective changes completely.
Instead of following the Youghiogheny from the trail, you’ll spend the afternoon paddling it back to Ohiopyle, seeing the same gorge from an entirely different point of view.
One September day. One beautiful stretch of Ohiopyle. Two completely different ways to experience it.

This Is September in Ohiopyle
Summer may get most of the attention, but September has a personality all its own.
Come for the crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Come for a bike ride or a hike. Wander around town. Watch the falls. Find a picnic spot. Spend some time doing absolutely nothing.
And while you’re here, grab a paddle.
Because one of the best ways to experience Ohiopyle in September is from the middle of the Youghiogheny River, with nowhere else you need to be.
The day is yours. Come spend it in Ohiopyle.
